Fungal single cell protein from macroalgal waste fermentation: improving sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of fish aquafeeds (AlFunFeed)

Description

Short description of the project: AlFunFeed is a three-year project co-financed by the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership and Horizon Europe, aimed at transforming aquafeed production through innovative biotechnological processes.

Expected results: AlFunFeed seeks to demonstrate the technical, nutritional, environmental, and economic feasibility of replacing conventional plant protein sources in aquafeeds for carnivorous fish species with single-cell protein produced via fungal fermentation of macroalgae‑based substrates. The project will deliver validated single-cell protein‑based feed formulations for European seabass, supported by comprehensive performance, welfare, and sustainability assessments.

Application/relevance: AlFunFeed contributes to the transition towards sustainable and resilient aquaculture by closing resource loops in aquafeed production and reducing dependence on environmentally intensive protein sources such as soybean meal and fishmeal.
