Organic Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) with sea bass/sea bream, shellfish, and seaweed to produce blue food

Organic IMTA with sea bass/sea bream, shellfish, and seaweed is a sustainable aquaculture practice that enables fish farms to diversify production while improving environmental and economic performance. By co‑cultivating fed species (sea bass and sea bream) with extractive species such as shellfish and seaweed, IMTA enhances nutrient recycling, reduces environmental impacts, and supports higher product quality. 

This integrated approach facilitates the transition to organic aquaculture by creating additional value streams, improving resource efficiency, and enabling the certification of multiple organic blue food products. Implemented in Greece through collaboration with research institutions and certification bodies, the practice strengthens farm resilience while aligning with EU organic regulations and sustainability objectives.
