Description
Short description of the project: BlueBioBoost is a three-year project funded by the EU Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership aimed at developing the macroalgae industry by improving the efficiency of propagation and selection of suitable genotypes; better exploiting genetic variation, while at the same time maintaining local genetic diversity and minimising the potential for genetic pollution of natural populations, and actively involving stakeholders in creating a plan for future macroalgae breeding in Europe.
Expected results: The expected results of the project include the development of innovative breeding strategies and tools to enhance macroalgae productivity while preserving local genetic diversity and minimising genetic pollution. This will involve creating a biodiversity collection of kelp gametophytes, improving growth rates, and establishing phenotyping protocols for key traits such as light and temperature tolerance. The project will also design methods to exploit hybrid vigour, develop ploidy-based breeding tools, and explore the potential of giant sea lettuce in aquaculture.
Application/relevance: The project will provide high-yield, locally adapted seeding materials, stimulate sustainable seaweed aquaculture, and support short-chain production systems, contributing to food security, coastal livelihoods, and a circular European bioeconomy. It will provide crucial insights into the genetic diversity of natural populations and cultivated material, and allow monitoring, evaluating, and/or mitigating the extent of genetic exchange from the onset of large-scale cultivation in co-existence with natural populations.
