Securing Holistic and Impactful Food Systems Transformation with Novel Foods Based on Alternative Proteins (EPIC-SHIFT)

Short description of the project: EPIC‑SHIFT is a three-year project financed by Horizon Europe aimed at exploring alternative protein sources from insects, fungi, algae, bacteria, and agricultural by-products.

Expected results: EPIC‑SHIFT will deliver an open Alternative Proteins Knowledge Hub, integrated environmental, economic, social, and health impact assessments for seven alternative protein types at scale (the Impact assessment of the regulatory framework on the market access of novel foods based on alternative protein sources (NFAP) is already available), and future scenario models defining a safe and sustainable operating space for NFAP in Europe. The project will generate actionable recommendations on regulation, market uptake, consumer acceptance, infrastructure needs, and investment dynamics, supported by concrete outputs such as impact assessment reports, a regulatory framework analysis, a watch platform, and dissemination and exploitation tools.

Application/relevance: By informing sustainable diets, fostering a just transition for food‑system stakeholders, and strengthening Europe’s leadership in food innovation, the project contributes directly to long‑term food security, environmental sustainability, and bioeconomy development.
