EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

Co-creating a decision support framework to ensure sustainable fish production in Europe under climate change (ClimeFish)

Description

ClimeFish was a four-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at helping ensure that the increase in seafood production comes in areas and for species where there is a potential for sustainable growth, given the expected developments in climate, thus contributing to robust employment and sustainable development of rural and coastal communities.

Tangible results: The project produced Guidelines for creating Climate Adaptation Plans (CAPs). It also developed an e-learning course on ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Fisheries and Aquaculture’, made available by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The project created a decision support framework (DSF) based on the project’s outcomes (i.e. case studies and publications), in the form of a software that simulates and visualises the impacts of different climate change scenarios on fish stocks and aquaculture.

Application/relevance: The DSF and various project results provide more reliable predictions in terms of the impact of climate change on aquaculture, and therefore help make better decisions for the future.
