European eel in the Mediterranean Sea

This publication examines the life cycle, distribution, and decline of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a migratory species spanning coastal, transitional, and inland waters across Europe and the Mediterranean. Highlighting the dramatic population decline caused by fishing and habitat pressures, it compiles findings from the GFCM Research Programme on European Eel (2020–2022), which united researchers and policymakers from nine Mediterranean countries. In particular, Chapter 12 reviews aquaculture of European eel across the Mediterranean region, providing information on rearing techniques and production.
