EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

Advancing European Aquaculture by Genome Functional Annotation (AQUA-FAANG)

Description

Short description of the project: AQUA-FANNG was a four-year project financed by Horizon 2020, aimed at generating genome-wide functional annotation maps for the six commercially most important fish species within European aquaculture and exploiting their contribution to variation in traits of commercial relevance, focusing on improved resistance to disease.

Tangible results: This project has carried out an in-depth analysis of the genetic make-up of six species of fish of great importance for European aquaculture – Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, sea bass, sea bream, turbot and common carp. All in all, the results of this project include a set of protocols for different species, best practices and recommendations on project development and guidelines, policy briefs in aquaculture breeding and animal welfare, scientific publications and four White Papers with AQUA-FANNG key achievements.

Application/relevance: AQUA-FAANG contributes to improving disease resistance in each of the main farmed fish species in Europe. In addition, it enhances precision breeding, drives competitiveness within the aquaculture sector, and enhances food and nutrition security in Europe.
