Description
The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the overarching EU legislation on fisheries and aquaculture. One of the key objectives of the Regulation is the growth of the EU aquaculture sector while ensuring its economic, environmental, and social sustainability, providing a source of healthy food for EU citizens, and contributing to food security. Specifically, Article 34 “Promoting sustainable aquaculture” aims to establish non-binding Union strategic guidelines on common priorities and targets for the development of sustainable aquaculture activities, as well as an “open method of coordination” between Member States to support the exchange of information and best practices. It also asks Member States to establish a multiannual national strategic plan for the development of aquaculture activities on their territory.
