Description
AQUAEXCEL2020 was a five-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at further supporting the sustainable growth of the European aquaculture sector through the integration of a large group of leading European aquaculture research facilities in order to advance aquaculture research and innovation in Europe.
Tangible results: A major feature of the project was its Transnational Access (TNA) programme, which allowed external EU research teams, industry, and SMEs to access the partners’ facilities via submission of research proposals. The project also offered training courses to educate researchers and industry stakeholders to use their new knowledge, skills, and tools. A virtual laboratory was also developed based on numerical modelling for researchers to simulate experiments with fish and receive data on expected growth and water prior to their practical application, therefore optimising the use of experimental resources and improving experimental design and test power.
Application/relevance: Through its TNA programme, the project offered free access to 39 unique research infrastructures of the participating institutes, which covered the entire range of production systems, environments, scales, fish species and fields of expertise.
