Consumer driven Production: Integrating Innovative Approaches for Competitive and Sustainable Performance across the Mediterranean Aquaculture Value Chain (PerformFISH)

Description

PerformFISH was a five-year project funded by EU H2020 aiming at increasing the competitiveness of Mediterranean aquaculture by overcoming biological, technical, and operational issues with innovative, cost-effective, integrated solutions, while addressing social and environmental responsibility and contributing to “Blue Growth”.

Tangible results: The project developed a tool called FEEDEST - PerformFISH Tool to Estimate Feeding Rates. The tool aims to help Mediterranean marine fish farmers’ operations and performance become efficient in economic and environmental conditions as well as to ensure that the operations are socially and culturally responsible. It also fosters modernisation through capacity building of the Mediterranean aquaculture workforce. The results of the project include the development of new more efficient vaccines for sea bass and gilthead sea bream protecting them against diseases. The vaccines were validated in commercial environments.

Application/relevance: The PerformFISH benchmark tool was developed to give an account of a system based on 55 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be used by the Mediterranean Fish Farming industry to get information about the differences between the technologies and production systems used by the industry.
