EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

GENetic diversity exploitation for Innovative macro-ALGal biorefinery (GENIALG)

Description

GENIALG was a five-and-a-half-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at boosting the European Blue Economy by designing high-yielding seaweed cultivation systems of two species: the brown alga Saccharina latissima and the green alga Ulva spp.

Tangible results: The project designed high-yielding seaweed cultivation systems of the two species, focusing on increasing their production and sustainable exploitation. GENIALG also created a platform, held a training course on sustainable seaweed farming practices and published a number of research reports with results on seaweed aquaculture.

Application/relevance: The project contributed to the diversification of farmed species, particularly of lower-trophic species. It has also enabled new opportunities for investors; increased stakeholder engagement and societal acceptance of sustainable seaweed productions; and brought together coastal economic communities (e.g., fisheries, tourism), national conservation organizations, environmental groups, and local stakeholders.
