Description
IMPAQT was a three-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at developing and validating a multi-purpose, multi-sensing and multi-functional management platform for sustainable Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) production, in order to pave the way to a more environmentally friendly and more efficient European aquaculture Industry.
Tangible results: The project developed an advanced IMTA model blueprint yielding spatially explicit information on how the different farm components interact with the environment on the scale of an ecosystem. An integrated management system, operating at the scale of an IMTA farm and comprising analysis and decision support functionalities, was also developed to enable enhanced operational decisions for animal welfare, production optimisation, environmental protection and food-quality assessment. In addition, the project has developed an online training course on IMTA and precision aquaculture, hosted on the Open University’s “OpenLearn Create” platform.
Application/relevance: The IMTA model can be used by farmers and regulators to estimate the many environmental and economic benefits of transitioning to it.
