MarRisk - Adaptation to climate change of the coast of Galicia and north of Portugal

Description

Short description of the project:  MarRisk was a five-year project financed by the European Regional Development Fund, aimed at supporting smart and sustainable growth of coastal areas through analysing the risks associated with climate change and their potential evolution. Applications, services, analysis, monitoring and surveillance were developed as part of the project to ensure a coordinated response across borders. The aim was to provide public administrations, companies and civil society with the tools needed to support decision-making.

Tangible results: MarRisk built an infrastructure that contains all the data sources in the Euroregion Galicia-North Portugal and a set of indicators. The research team also proposed indicators using this data to evaluate the risks to communities and their economies. In addition, detailed scenarios were developed to understand the evolution of climate change-related challenges.

Application/relevance: The project generated information about the fate of mussel aquaculture, coastal floods and the resilience of infrastructure, and it made calculations about the economic costs of adaptation in North Portugal, taking into account different strategies, such as defence, adaptation or relocation.
