EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

Novel closed-cage system for high-value marine aquaculture (NEPTUN)

Description

NEPTUN was a three-and-a-half-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at upscaling, piloting, and commercialising the patented Closed-Cage Aquaculture System (CCAS) for sustainable and cost-effective inshore aquaculture.

Tangible results: The project developed a Closed-Cage Aquaculture System (CCA) creating an environmentally- friendly, biosecure habitat for raising Atlantic salmon, so that the fish avoid contact with the surrounding marine environment. This minimises pollution and disease outbreaks and therefore, reduces mortality and improves the feed factor. It significantly reduces the risk of salmon lice and the release of organic nutrients and wastes into the surrounding environment.

Application/relevance: The project has applications in the marine industries (e.g. farming).
