Remediation of Marine Environment and Development of Innovative Aquaculture: exploitation of edible/not edible biomass (REMEDIA)

Description

Short description of the project: REMEDIA was a six-year project funded by the LIFE Programme, aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of mariculture plants, while creating new environmental and economic value.

Tangible results: The project has developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of an Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system based on bioremediator organisms as a way to mitigate negative environmental effects of aquaculture activities.

Application/relevance: REMEDIA's system provides for the first time at European level the use, in a combined way, of bioremediation organisms such as Polychaetes and Porifera in addition to the most commonly used mussels and macroalgae, having a high tolerance to environmental stress conditions and better performances as bioremediators.
