EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

VeriFish

Description

Short description of the project: VeriFish is a two-year project financed by Horizon Europe aimed at providing an accessible and dynamic framework of verifiable sustainability indicators for the improvement of communication and understanding of sustainable seafood production and consumption.

Expected results: VeriFish is developing a European comprehensive framework of sustainability indicators. A draft of the framework has already been shared with a group of experts and will be presented to a broader European audience in 2025 for feedback and refinement. Once finalised, the project will use the indicator framework to develop a Good Practices recommendation for how to efficiently organise sustainable seafood consumption campaigns, which will be published as a  CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA).
In addition, VeriFish has also established a Community of Practice (CoP) consisting of organisations and stakeholders committed to promoting sustainable seafood. The project is also developing a prototype mobile app and series of media products that simplify the often complex landscape of seafood consumption. These tools are designed to educate and engage a broad audience, from seafood producers and retailers to consumers and policymakers.

Application/relevance: VeriFish plays a pivotal role in addressing the growing need for standardised, verifiable information on seafood sustainability, nutritional value, provenance, and potential health risks.
