Description
Restorative ocean farming is a term used interchangeably with regenerative ocean farming or regenerative aquaculture. Regenerative aquaculture is defined as a form of commercial aquaculture that supports initiatives to provide direct ecological benefits to the environment, leading to improved environmental sustainability and ecosystem services, in addition to the supply of seafood or other commercial products and opportunities for livelihood. This report is a task under the first iteration of the EU4lgae stakeholder platform to compile information, develop a business case and draft recommendations on “the development of a restorative ocean farming (algae bioremediation potential) as well as reasonable land use for offshore cultivation e.g. water management”. These recommendations outline an EU framework allowing the deployment of algae-based carbon and nutrient sequestration projects (e.g. marine permaculture projects).
