Description
This article summarises the development of aquaculture since 2000 and its integration into the global food system. The main topics covered are: aquaculture systems (which are highly diverse); aquaculture production (mainly from inland aquaculture and marine aquaculture); growth of annual production factors (intensification, the use of more and better feeds, improved produc-tion management, and increased attention to biosecurity); land use (aquaculture is more efficient than terrestrial animal production); the challenge of water use; reducing water consumption and facilitating nutrient recovery and reuse; and future development and recommendations.
