Algae-to-Market Lab Ideas - Adding value to marine invasive seaweeds of the Iberian northwest (AMALIA)

Description

AMALIA was a four-year project funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), aimed at developing ways to create value out of invasive seaweeds, investigating possibilities in the creation of medicines, cosmetics, animal and fish feed, and other forms of food.

Tangible results: The project developed and tested two products: (i) an edible and biodegradable ‘plastic’ film to be used in the frozen fish packaging industry to reduce plastics and increase the shelf-life of seafood products; and (ii) a shrimp feed produced and tested in industrial facilities using different seaweeds with the aim of decreasing shrimp mortality.

Application/relevance: The project developed ways to create value out of invasive seaweeds, therefore contributing in an innovative way to tackle the issue of invasive alien species (EU Regulation 1143/2014 under the Invasive Alien Species Regulation).
