EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism

Ecosystem Approach to making Space for Aquaculture (AquaSpace)

Description

AquaSpace was a four-year project funded by EU Horizon 2020, aimed at understanding the spatial and socio-economic constraints on the expansion of aquaculture, and testing tools to help overcome these constraints.

Tangible results: AquaSpace developed a Toolbox containing information about tools (i.e., legal instruments, processes, computer model applications, etc.) studied during the project that support the purpose of making more high-quality space available for aquaculture; as well as guidance on when and how to use these tools. The project also produced a Masters Module and a Continuing Development Module on “Planning and Managing the use of Space for Aquaculture” for self-teaching purposes or as the basis for a taught module. Additionally, a total of 17 Case Studies on marine fish and shellfish farming were developed in Europe, China, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Application/relevance: The Toolbox can be interesting to all those working in the fields of marine spatial planning or the environmental effects of aquaculture.
