Description
The European Green Deal aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use. It therefore lays down a roadmap of the key policies and measures needed to achieve this green transition. Some of the main objectives of the Green Deal include the stimulation of the economy and creation of jobs while accelerating the transition; design of a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system; and preservation and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity. In addition, the Green Deal acknowledges the potential of farmed seafood as a source of protein for food and feed with a low-carbon footprint, which explains the adoption of the 2021 new strategic guidelines on aquaculture. Indeed, the sector plays a key role in the green transition and should therefore continue to grow, with its biggest potential of contributing to reducing carbon emissions, transitioning to more sustainable food systems, reversing the loss of biodiversity, reducing pollution, and creating jobs in coastal and rural communities.
