Description
The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal and lays down a new comprehensive approach to enable and accelerate the transition of agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, and the food value chain towards a more sustainable food system. One that has a neutral or positive environmental impact; helps mitigate change and adapts to its impacts; reverses the loss of biodiversity; ensures food security, nutrition and public health; guarantees a good animal welfare; and preserves affordability of food while generating fairer economic returns, fostering competitiveness of the EU supply sector and promoting fair trade. This strategy supports the transition by putting the emphasis on new opportunities for citizens and food operators alike. It underlines the potential of farmed seafood as a source of protein for food and feed with a low-carbon footprint, which is essential to help build a sustainable food system; and sets specific targets for aquaculture, in particular a 50% reduction in sales of antimicrobials in aquaculture by 2030 and a significant increase in organic aquaculture.
