An innovative, sector-leading seaweed biorefinery - enabling the European blue circular economy (KELP-EU)

Description

KELP-EU is a project lasting 27 months funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), aimed at jump-starting the European sustainable seaweed industry by developing a sustainably farmed EU seaweed industry, scaling up seaweed biorefinery process, and developing four new seaweed-based products.

Tangible results: The project has launched OCEAN HEALTH® Fiber, an emerging high-quality fiber with excellent functional benefits as a versatile ingredient for gluten-free breads, plant-based meats, beverages, and much more. It also expects to develop other three products relying on its developed biorefinery process.

Application/relevance: The project’s in-house food scientists and prospective customers have tested OCEAN HEALTH® Fiber’s versatility in many formulations, including in gluten-free breads, smoothies, and plant-based meats products. From extending shelf life due to improved moisture retention to replacing synthetic ingredients like methylcellulose, OCEAN HEALTH® Fiber provides numerous opportunities and benefits for food applications.
