Demonstration of an IoT 4.0 mussel processing system for an advanced seafood canning industry (MUSSELPRO)

MUSSELPRO was a one-and-a-half-year project funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), aimed at scaling-up the MUSSELPRO system, an innovative solution that automatically optimises and controls the conditions of mussel cooking and sterilisation, adjusting the processing times and temperature levels to the characteristics of each batch of mussels to be processed.

Tangible results: The project demonstrated MUSSELPRO’s efficiency in a real industrial environment, which allowed for system calibration and optimisation under real processing conditions.

Application/relevance: MUSSELPRO has a direct impact on the efficiency of European canneries by reducing in processing time, increasing processing output, lowering energy use and water consumption. It also improves product quality by lowering dehydration through even heat distribution.  Moreover, via lower greenhouse gas emissions and lower water use, MUSSELPRO also contributes to better protection of the natural environment.
